Everything Old Is New Again

One trend that I've noticed (since I've been formatting e-books) is that a lot of authors are obtaining digital rights to books they published years ago and self-distributing them in the various e-book venues. I formatted a biography that dated back to the 1970s along with several other former print titles that pre-dated the invention of e-books.
Is this rush to get everything in electronic format an indication that this e-book revolution (or "explosion", as some call it) isn't just a publishing fad or a new portal for self-published authors to have their 15-minutes in the sun?
While a few still seem wary of the shifting tide toward e-books, it seems that some traditionally-published authors are finding that it's a way to introduce their older books to a whole new crop of readers.
